Welcome to GeoSGB, the geoscience system of the Geological Survey of Brazil - SGB.
If your interest is the geology of Brazil, you are in the right place. Whether you are a miner, a public manager, an environmentalist, an academic, a geologist or is just curious about geology, GeoSGB's website will allow you to access the most complete and up-to-date collection of data and geological information of the Brazilian territory.
All our effort is for you to get, as faster as possible, the data or information you need, so we hope that the links and tools available are really useful. However, if you find it difficult to navigate, find information or even want to give some suggestions for improvement, use the channel provided in the Contact Us. Your contact will be welcome.
The current GeoSGB is the old Geobank, with a new layout to facilitate access to the information and products of the Geological Survey of Brazil.
GeoSGB is a complex web-based management system that involves a dozen thematic databases (see specific item, below), data query and entry applications, real-time information visualization and spatialization solutions, different file download options, geoprocessing tools and WMS services.

As support, GeoSGB uses state-of-the-art multi-technology features. Among its many functionalities, the system allows to consult the databases and plotting maps, using GEOLOGY.SIG and ENGINEERING GEOLOGY.SIG. If you prefer, you can also export the data in shapefile (native of ESRI), formatted txt and download in KML (native of Google©), to use them in any compatible geoprocessing software.
Through GeoSGB, the Geological Survey of Brazil - CPRM participates in the OneGeology Project, sponsored by UNESCO, which aims to make available geological maps of all countries of the globe. It also allows the visualization of maps in the Infraestrutura Nacional de Dados Espaciais - VINDE.
GeoSGB System Databases
GeoSGB makes available to the public 10 databases related to the following subjects:
Base Name | Registered Object | Graphic Form | Description |
---|---|---|---|
AFLO Base | Outcrops | Point | Outcrops are exposures of rocks on the surface of the Earth. They are the basic data of geological research, described locally by the researcher. |
GEOCRON Base | Geochronological Dating | Point | The geochronological dating are special analyzes that uses the principles of radioactive decay to accurately determine the age of the analyzed material and, by interpretation, a reliable estimate of the rock formation age. Each record of this database is related to a LITO base record. |
GEODIV Base | Geodiversity Parameters | Polygon | The geodiversity unit is an area on the land surface with a particular set of parameters of the physical environment, such as vulnerabilities and capacity to support the implantation of several anthropic activities dependent on geological factors. |
GEOQ Base | Geochemical Analysis | Point | They are chemical determinations of certain elements or substances, from various types of materials collected in the field (soil, stream sediment, bateia etc.). They aim to provide the researcher with a view of the local contents of the analyzed elements, in relation to values considered normal on Earth. Geochemical sampling is done during geological mapping projects, mineral research, geoenvironmental research etc. |
LITO Base | Lithostratigraphic Units | Polygon | The lithostratigraphic unit is the basic element of the geological map and represents an area on the surface of the Earth where occurs a set of rocks of the same age, formed in the same event. |
PALEO Base | Fossiliferous Events | Point | The fossiliferous occurrence represents the place of discovery of a fossil specimen, both animal and plant. |
PETRO Base | Petrographic Analysis | Point | Petrographic analysis is the microscopic study of a rock (composition and structures), made from a thin blade. Each record of this database is related to an AFLO base record. |
PROJ Base | Projects | Polygon | Catalog of projects executed by CPRM, except aerogeophysical. Each project represents the study of a national territory area, under various aspects: geology, mineral potential etc. |
AERO Base | Aerogeophysical Survey Projects | Polygon | Catalog of aerogeophysical survey projects executed by CPRM and other institutions. Each aerogeophysical survey project represents the study of a national territory area, using airborne sensors to determine values of magnetometric parameters, gamma spectrometric, radiometric, among others. |
RECMIN Base | Mineral Occurrences | Point | Mineral occurrence is any outcrop that represents a good of economic interest (granite, limestone, sand etc.), or that contains mineral-ore, or satellite that may indicate proximity of concentration of economic interest (sulfides, oxides , gems etc.). The occurrence may be just an outcrop, as well as a mine, a deposit, a prospect, among others. |
